Help Friends Groups
Friends Groups also have opportunities for volunteers to help. Here are a few examples:
The Friends of Tryon Creek (FOTC) is a nonprofit organization housed in the Nature Center of Tryon Creek State Natural Area, a 650-acre green space in southwest Portland. Our mission, in partnership with Oregon State Parks, is to inspire and nurture relationships with nature in our unique urban forest. Since 1970, FOTC has provided environmental education programs for all ages through its many camps, events and workshops, and has lead restoration efforts resulting in 200 acres cleared of invasive species. Click the links below to learn more about volunteer opportunities with Friends of Tryon Creek.
The Nature Store at Silver Falls State Park is a wonderful volunteer opportunity if you like working in a lovely forest setting and meeting and introducing visitors from all over the world to Oregon’s largest state park. We ask our volunteers to come once a week for a four-hour shift. We set a monthly schedule because almost all of our volunteers are retired so we work around their trips and vacations. The volunteers are issued name tags and wear a vest to identify them as Friends volunteers. There is some training involved to learn information about the park in order to answer visitor questions and to operate the point of sale machine. We have several socials throughout the year, mainly an awards dinner in April, a barbecue at the end of the season, and a nice Christmas party where we decorate the Lodge for Christmas.
